Originally from Taiwan, Brooklyn-based Ssu-ya Hsuing uses the media of performance art to stage the escapism from reality that she is unwilling to continue living in. Hsuing states that “it is a way of attempting to negate our personal responsibility and to avoid the discomfort of existential angst that we all must deal with. We are ultimately responsible for all the decisions that we make and the actions that we take, but living in a fantasy world is a way of absolving ourselves of the consequences of our actions.” She considers herself an “escape artist” who is creating her own value system through art.
Ssu-ya Hsuing was awarded the Emerging Artist Residency Fellow and will spend time at the Santa Fe Art Institute in 2018 to develop new work.
