In 2024, the Foundation created a new fellowship program, The Impact Award for Native American Art, to specifically amplify the work of under-recognized Native American visual artists by awarding an unrestricted grant of $25,000 to be used toward the development of the grantee’s work. In its inaugural year, this new program received 145 applications from artists from over 50 Native American tribal communities.
After careful review by a panel of Native art advisors, our first Impact Award fellow has been selected. We could not be more excited to announce that Kapulani Landgraf of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi has been awarded the 2024 Impact Award for Native American Art.
Guided by traditional Hawaiian language and culture, Landgraf’s work celebrates Native Hawaiian values while calling into question the profound impact of foreign intrusion on Hawaiian people, land, and natural resources. Through photography, collage, and mixed-media installation, her work engages in creative forms of resistance that both lament the destruction of Native lands and acknowledge the strength and resilience of Hawaiian people.
We are proud to contribute our support to Kapulani Landgraf’s robust and longstanding artistic practice.
