Isolated in the island of Eastport, Maine, Anna Hepler works in ceramics, crocheted wire, soft sculpture, collage, etching, and virtually any other medium pulled into her creative orbit.[1] Hepler has worked with air to create non-static sculptures, restless with cycles of inflation and deflation; and has built large sculptural forms from steel wire that collapse perceptually in space, existing as a ghostly drawing despite their aggressive size. These works grow from an impulsive place, beyond reach of clear language or reason, emerging from and describing a world of gestures and feelings that she cannot describe. For years, she has explored a family of “elemental” forms and motifs, flattening, stretching, and reconfiguring them in the pursuit of some basic core truth. A fan of improvisation and experimentation, Hepler strives to suspend her practice in uncertainty.
